As if the beginning of each school year wasn’t exciting enough, the JCC North Early Childhood Education program kicked off its 25th year with big news—a prestigious two-star rating from the voluntary, quality rating system, Ohio’s Step Up To Quality program.
“It gives our program an edge. It tells families that we’ve achieved certain criteria for a well-rounded and high quality early childhood program. We’ve set the bar high,” said JCC North Site Director Jennifer Wilkinson.
The two-star rating, which the preschool earned for the first time last year, means that it has met and surpassed all the licensing requirements of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and fulfilled additional requirements as determined by the state-funded program.
These criteria include classroom communication between teachers and students, teacher training and education, classroom size, and teacher-student ratios. Schools must also demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement of the learning environment.
Nikki Henry, Early Childhood Director for all three JCC sites, is proud of the JCC North’s accomplishment. The two-star rating, she said, “shows how hard the staff has worked to exceed Ohio’s childcare licensing standards.”
Wilkinson agreed, “I have a staff of very talented, dedicated teachers who truly care about the education and well-being of each child at our center.”
Step Up To Quality awards top-performing preschools with up to three stars, as well as a monetary award, which Wilkinson used last year to purchase new books, toys, posters, and puzzles emphasizing diversity and multicultural instruction.
