Congratulations to the Greater Columbus BBYO (B’nai B’rith Youth Organization) for its many awards won at the recent KIO (Kentucky-Indiana-Ohio) Spirit Convention. Columbus BBYO brought 46 teens to the KIO Spirit Convention on October 26-28, 2012. The four Columbus chapters— two teams of boys and two of girls—had fun working together to prove they had the most spirit while participating in a variety of events from dodge ball to relay races. Competition highlights included an Iron Chef competition to see who made the best sandwich and the “chapter-carry” contest, where teammates carried each other on their backs as they crossed the finish line together.

One of the Columbus girls’ chapters, team Aliah, won the KIO BBG Spirit Stick, a trophy-like 2×4 that is currently housed in the JCC until next year. Pops DSK, one of the boys’ teams, won second place in the AZA spirit competition. Mark Moscardino, Columbus BBYO director, said of his proud teens, “This shows how strong our Columbus BBYO chapters are. It’s impressive that our boys and girls each won 1st and 2nd place at this competition.”

Team Aliah member Halle Herman helped coordinate the trip to Cincinnati, where teens stayed at Camp Campbell Gard for the competition. “Coordinating the weekend was a truly rewarding experience,” said Halle, “I learned how to work with large groups of people and developed invaluable leadership skills. I was also part of the winning BBG chapter, Aliah. …And winning the Spirit Stick was one of our proudest moments.”

Columbus has the largest BBYO group in the KIO region, made up of over 100 teens from all over central Ohio. BBYO is a youth group led by the teens that comprise it with a mission to have fun in a Jewish environment. They focus on giving back, “tikkun olam” or repairing the world, raising awareness, and building leadership skills. Beginning this week, BBYO teens are giving back through a friendly competition with the Kaleidoscope youth to see who can collect the most donations for their annual food drive. Collections will continue through December 20. Last year, BBYO won the competition, collecting over 120 non-perishable items for the drive. Donation boxes are in the JCC lobby for drop off.

BBYO boys also recently won big at the regional basketball tournament in September. The Heart of Ohio boys’ team won first place in the tournament, while the Pops DSK team won third place. Coming up in December, Columbus BBYO will be traveling to Indianapolis regional elections of new board members. Each chapter will renew its focus with end-of-year reflection and refreshment.
