JCC Announces Co-Chairs for 2016 Maccabi Games
The Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus is pleased to announce that Karen Shore Meyer and Jon Meyer will serve as Committee Chairs for the 2016 JCC Maccabi Games. From July 24-29, 2016, more than 750 Jewish teen athletes from North America and Israel are anticipated to attend the Olympics-style athletic competition and social events in Columbus. Sports events at the 2016 Games will include basketball, soccer, golf, tennis, and more. The JCC has been honored to host the games multiple times: in 1995, 1999, and 2004.
“Karen and I are thrilled to be co-chairing the 2016 JCC Maccabi Games. We look forward to all that lies ahead over the next two years as we plan, organize, and mobilize to support these young athletes. In years past, it has been a joy to see our Jewish community enthusiastically come together to ensure that teens from around the world have a positive experience here. We know that tradition will continue with these Games,” said Jon Meyer, who has volunteered within the Jewish community and at the JCC in a variety of ways over the years, including working on fundraising for the 1999 JCC Maccabi Games. Meyer grew up at the JCC and has continued the JCC tradition with his family. His wife, Karen Shore Meyer, has served on the JCC Board of Trustees.
As co-chairs, the Meyers have already begun to plan and organize for the competition. They are currently focused on building committees for all aspects of the competition, from transportation and housing to fundraising and athletic facility logistics. “The success of this event depends upon the community’s involvement,” said Karen Shore Meyer.
“JCCA, our national association, and our Columbus JCC’s experience and track record of success with these Games show us that we need to build quality, broad-based committees. As such, we are currently focused on recruiting community leaders for these positions to ensure another successful turn as the host community for one of the largest Jewish athletic events in the world.”
