JCC Randy Kohn Memorial

As people walked into the JCC on Sunday afternoons in November, December, January and February it was commonplace to hear the bounce of basketballs, the squeak of sneakers and the roaring cheers of the crowd. It was another exciting season of The JCC Randy Kohn Memorial Youth Basketball League.

Every Sunday players in K – 6th grades participated in fun and energetic practices and games. During the season players from 1st – 6th grade participated in a weekly skills night and improved their fundamentals of the game. More importantly, by participating in the league, the players learned valuable lessons, in teamwork, perseverance and sportsmanship.

Every player was placed on a team and received a reversible jersey with the league’s logo and a number. In the middle of the season the “HOOPLA” event gave a break from games and gave players a chance to compete in dribbling relay races, shooting games and a basketball obstacle course. At the end of the season, the 3rd – 6th grade teams participated in the Day of Champions while the K – 2nd grade teams had an ice cream party. Everyone received a participation medal for their season long effort.

A special thank you to the Volunteer Coaches. Without them, the program would not be able to be a success. The JCC and players appreciate the time and effort the coaches put into the program. Also thank you to the following sponsors: Amy M. Levine Attorneys at Law, Advanced Chiropractic, Moses Jewelers, Playtime Pandas, and Smadar V. Import MA., CCC/SLP-L Speech Language Pathologist.

Season Recap of JCC/Bexley Youth Basketball Travel Teams

The JCC/Bexley youth travel team basketball program wrapped up another season and was able to help 88 boys and girls improve their basketball skills at a more competitive level.  With the help of the Bexley Varsity Head Coaches, our coaches are able to teach the players the skills needed in middle and high school basketball programs.

This season, 10 basketball teams competed in area leagues, including three girls’ teams in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Seven boys’ teams includes two 4th grade teams, one 4th/5th grade team, two 5th grade teams, and two 6th grade teams. Eight of the teams were part of the over 300 team program called the Central Ohio Basketball Association (COBA).  These teams played 18-24 games against teams from across Central Ohio.  The teams also competed in holiday tournaments and the COBA season ending tournament. The two remaining teams played a smaller game schedule of 10-12 games against local teams.

The teams started the season with a new program. Every player had the opportunity to participate in free preseason workout clinics every Sunday for six weeks.  These clinics were instructed by Coach Andrea Preston, Capital Women’s Assistant Coach and Pat Noles, JCC Private Basketball Trainer. The season kicked off in late October with two practices per week, and games began in late November continuing through mid-February.

All the teams had a successful season and continued to improve throughout the season. The JCC wishes to thank all the coaches that volunteered their time this season to make it a success for the kids.
