JCC Launches New Parkinson’s Fitness Program

A kick-off open house will be held on Tuesday, June 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the JCC to introduce a new fitness program for those with Parkinson’s disease (PD), the only program of its kind on the Near East side of Columbus. The program, OhioHealth Delay the Disease (DTD), is designed to improve the physical, mental, and emotional realities of PD patients.

“We are both honored and excited to be able to offer this valuable program to our members and the community,” explained Beth McCullough, Asst. Fitness Director, DTD Program Director, and certified DTD trainer. “Delay the Disease is the #1 Parkinson’s exercise program and is a wonderful tool for Parkinson’s patients and their families.”

David Zid (BA, ACE, APG), Parkinson’s fitness specialist and OhioHealth Director of Movement Disorder and Musculoskeletal Wellness, and Jackie Russell (RN, BSN, CNOR), OhioHealth Program Development Coordinator, collaborated to create this effective wellness program which empowers people with PD to live better and experience new levels of hope.

OhioHealth Delay the Disease delivers symptom-specific exercises that optimize function and restore independence. Participants experience improvement in mobility, posture, balance, handwriting, speech volume, and a reduction in daily functional challenges. The classes are a source of fun, social camaraderie, and hope.

“PD patients can manage their disease through exercise—and we encourage everyone to start today! We’re here to help,” said Zid. “Our goal is to make the benefits of Delay the Disease classes available to as many people with PD as possible– we have DTD classes all over Greater Columbus, but until now, not on the east side. You may have Parkinson’s disease, but it does not have you.”

Zid and DTD group-class master-teacher Christa Ream will be at the kick-off event. If you have Parkinson’s or have a family member who does, you are urged to attend, meet these dedicated health professionals and learn about OhioHealth DTD.

Classes begin in July and details will be available soon. For more information, contact Beth McCullough at 614-559-6207 or bmccullough@columbusjcc.org with questions.
