The JCC will hold an artist reception for Marty Kalb on Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. to kick-off his “Altars and Icons” exhibition. The reception is free and open to the public. Kalb’s exhibition will continue at the JCC through the end of October.

Artist Marty KalbKalb has been exhibiting his ar twork in various media for over 50 years. He has academic degrees from Michigan State University, Yale University and the University of California Berkeley. He was a professor of Fine Art at Ohio Wesleyan University from 1967 -2007 His works are included in numerous public and private venues in the USA and abroad, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Detroit Institute of Art, and Holocaust-focused museums and educational institutions in Chicago, Los Angeles, Tampa, Buenos Aries, Argentina, and Mechelen, Belgium.

“Altars and Icons” explores the similarities in spiritual structures around the world, based on Kalb’s own travels and experiences. Specifically, he finds that most feature simple and symmetrically balanced architecture. “These basic designs help focus the participants’ attention on intangible spiritual elements,” Kalb observes.

“These paintings, both large and small, start with a straight-forward, basic house shape, not unlike what a child might draw as he or she makes their first attempts at rendering reality,” says Kalb, describing the artwork in the exhibition. “By containing the action inside a stable, ‘universal’ frame I want the viewer to feel the importance of the action as something unique, with energy akin to that felt when believers revere the special significance of a religious artifact.”

Kalb will speak at the artist reception on Sept. 11 and greet attendees. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information about the exhibition and artist reception, contact Melanie Butter at mbutter@columbusjcc.org or (614) 559-6233.
