At its most basic level, safety is the state of being "safe" - the condition of being protected against any event that could be considered non-desirable, and can include the protection of people or of possessions.
To ensure the safety of every member, guest, and employee of the JCC, the center has hired a fulltime security director, Lloyd Graham.
A native of Columbus, Officer Graham is a graduate of the Central Ohio Police Officers Training Academy, and has received training in SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics), VIP Executive Protection and Counter-Terrorism. He also currently serves as a member of the Plymouth (Ohio) Police Department.
"I like helping people - it makes me happy," said Officer Graham. "And I've already met some very wonderful people here at the JCC. I'm very happy to be here."
JCC Director of Operations Mike Klapper said that while the JCC has utilized the services of security firms in the past, this is the first time that the JCC has hired a security director of its own. In addition, he said, thanks to a grant written for the commmunity by the Columbus Jewish Federation, the JCC has installed several new security features as part of a grant from the Homeland Security Program.
"Within the past year, we have installed a new fence, new lighting in the parking lots, security cameras both inside and outside the center, as well as bollards at the front entrance," he said.
So, next time you have any safety concerns or issues, see Officer Graham. He'll be happy to be of assistance.
