The mitzvah of giving shalach manot - or Purim baskets - has become one of the most prominent features of the celebration of Purim. Derived from the Book of Esther, shalach manot are are gifts of food or drink that are sent to friends and relatives, and is meant to ensure that everyone has enough food for the Purim feast held later in the day, and to increase love and friendship. Shalach manot also may be given to those in need as part of a larger mitzvah of social obligation.
The Year 1 class of the Melton Mini-School chose to observe the mitzvot of giving their em>shalach manos to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, donating 74 pounds of food, plus a monetary donation of $30.
