The JCC is offering intensive Hebrew classes for adults, modeled after the Israeli "Ulpan" method, from June 15-25. Shaula Gurari, a Hebrew, Judaics and music instructor in the community for more than 25 years, will be teaching the course.
"The classes will focus on Hebrew conversational skills and will use music, visual art and games as an integral part of the curriculum," said Gurari. "Give us two weeks, and we will make you a Hebrew speaker through a fun and easy way to learn the Hebrew language."
Gurari said because the classes will be taught using the "Ulpan" method, they will be conducted in Hebrew, right from the first class. She noted that the concept of Ulpan (a Hebrew word meaning "teaching") was initiated soon after the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. "Israel was faced with a massive influx of new immigrants, refugees from war-torn Europe, and people from all other parts of the world," she said. "Although they all were recognized as Jewish, their languages and cultures varied widely. By attending an Ulpan, learning the Hebrew language served as a common bond to develop a shared identity and sense of statehood."
Classes will start on June 15 and will continue through June 25, meeting daily for two hours, with the exception of Fridays. Students will be arranged in classes according to their Hebrew level. Classes will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. or 6 to 8 p.m., depending upon the student's level and preference, from June 15 to 18, and June 22 to 25.
Class fees are $220 for JCC members and $250 for non-members. A minimum of 8 students per class need to be registered in order for the class to take place.
Gurari holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in music education, special education and art. She was a founding principal of the Kol Ami Community Hebrew School, taught for 11 years at the Columbus Jewish Day School, and has been a Hebrew lecturer at The Ohio State University for 20 years. Beginning in September 2009, she will become the coordinator of the Hebrew language program at OSU.
