The summer of 2008 marks David Weinberg's debut as the director of Camp Chaverim at the JCC. His many years of participation as a camper, junior counselor, counselor and program specialist at the main campus and the Hoover site, provide him with a wealth of specialized knowledge and a unique perspective. A recent graduate of The Ohio State University's Master of Social Work program, David uses his parenting, work and academic experiences to develop and express a camp philosophy that has depth and breadth.
David believes that children attend camp to enjoy activities and make friends. "However," he said, "parents send children to a Jewish day camp to help them develop and support their Jewish identity. And the way to enhance Jewish identity is by creating opportunities for positive relationships, teaching and modeling values and providing memorable experiences."
For these reasons Camp Chaverim is the place to be this summer! Leadership and specialized staff will work with counselors to give them the tools and information needed to provide the campers with meaningful and fun-filled days. A return to an emphasis on camping crafts and the great outdoors will foster a greater appreciation for nature. Featured activities will include: storytelling, swimming, Judaics, music, sports, art, and Israeli culture.
According to Weinberg, "The key to a successful summer is unlocking the potential for ruach (spirit) in each and every camper and counselor. When this happens children gain confidence in their abilities, make and sustain long-lasting friendships and feel they are an important part of their community."
Camp Chaverim is one of 6 summer day camps operated by the JCC and is for campers entering Kindergarten through 3rd grade.
