Darrell Thornton II recently joined the staff of the JCC's kosher kitchen as part of his three-month "externship" from the Columbus Culinary Institute at Bradford School. "The externship is required for graduation, and gives the culinary students experience in real kitchens working under real chefs," he said.

Thornton has been studying the culinary arts at the institute for the past three years. "I really like working with Chef Tony Robertson and am really enjoying learning about the preparation of Kosher foods," he said. "I think that Kosher food is a lot healthier, too."

"The best thing about being a chef," said Thornton, "is the chance to create something that people will appreciate with their eyes as well as their tastebuds.

"I really like to show my creativity in the kitchen," he said.

After he completes his externship, plans are that Thornton will join the JCC staff permanently. For more information on Kosher catering, visit the JCC website at www.columbusjcc.org or call (614) 231-2731.
