Summer Jobs at JCC Teach Leadership Skills

Summer provides the perfect opportunity for teens and college students to gain work experience and get a leg up on the competition in the job market - if they know how to go about it.

While some summer jobs may mean performing tedious or basic tasks, there are a few available at the JCC that could provide the opportunity to change a life - or even save one.

"Here at the JCC, we have a variety of summer jobs that really could impact someone's life," said Tim Kauffman, JCC Assistant Executive Director. "For instance, we have current job openings for summer camp counselors, lifeguards, and swimming instructors. If you think about it, all of those jobs are ones in which you really could make a difference in someone else's life.

Just as importantly, these jobs will provide you the chance to learn leadership skills that you definitely will be able to apply later on in the workforce," he said. "And, let's face it, whatever experience you can get now absolutely will help you move ahead of the competition when you're looking for a permanent, full-time position after graduation."

Recent statistics support Kauffman's statement. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) 2007 statistics, students with good "people" skills will really benefit when they join the workforce; among all employment sectors, the service industry is predicted to have the highest overall increase in new college hiring with jobs in areas such consulting, healthcare and retail. Furthermore, the recent slump in summer employment for teens (as cited by the 2007 Current Population Surveys), makes the JCC one of the few places actively hiring for that demographic group.
