Citizenship and Naturalization Classes Offered

Statue of Liberty

Americans will be celebrating the anniversary of the birth of the nation and the privileges of being a United States citizen later on this week. For many in the community, though, those privileges are only a dream.

However, JCC offers on-going Citizenship and Naturalization classes on Monday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and on Friday mornings, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The classes are available to all eligible immigrants. (Permanent residents are eligible for citizenship after five years of emigration, or three years if married to a U.S. citizen.)

Participants will receive help with understanding and filing the N-400 form for Naturalization, and civic education as required by the U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization service. In addition, participants will undergo mock interviews for the official citizenship interview.

Workshop for ESOL High School Students Set

An intensive language workshop for low-intermeidate and advanced-intermediate high school students has been set for July 14 through July 25 at the JCC.

The workshop, which will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday, will focus on reading and writing, and speaking and listening skills. A few of the topics to be covered will include: reduced speech, common idioms, control of basic grammatical structure, prepositions and phrasal verbs and drawing conclusions. There is a nominal fee to attend the workshop.

For more information on either of these programs, contact ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Director Yass Benis at (614) 559-6202.
