A player at the Barkan Memorial Shootout Tournament makes a slam-dunk.
The JCC was the site of the 9th Annual William A. Barkan Memorial Shootout on June 17-24, with games played both in the JCC gymnasium and on the new outdoor Barkan Sports Court. Six teams from area high schools participated in this year's tournament. Players in the league represented many area high schools, such as Beechcroft, Brookhaven, Centennial, East, Eastmoor, FCI, Independence, Linden, Marion Franklin, Mifflin, Northland, Pickerington Central, South, and Walnut Ridge.
"This is a free event for all the teams," said Jeanna Brownlee, JCC director of Sports and Wellness. "Money raised through sponsors help to pay for the tournament and the new Barkan Memorial Outdoor Sports Court. Through the four evenings of games, the teams played five scheduled games and then were seeded and played in a single elimination tournament."
Trophies were awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams and medals were handed out to the All Tournament Team decided upon by the coaches. The All Tournament Team was comprised of Dominic Kee (South), Eric Dukes (Linden), DeAngelo Simms (Independence), Vincent Coleman (Eastmoor), Diallo Ford (Centennial), and Robert White (Brookhaven).
Team Butler 2 won the tournament, with the team from Independence High School coming in second.
"The Barkan Family and the JCC express their appreciation to all the teams and the sponsors. Their participating and generous donations helped make this tournament a success," said Brownlee.
