Bishop Hartley High School Team Wins Barkan Memorial at JCC
Ten teams from area high schools participated in the recent 15th Annual William A. Barkan Memorial Basketball Shootout held at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Greater Columbus on June 10-12. Players in the shootout represented many area high schools including Bexley, Centennial, Independence, Briggs, South, Bishop Hartley, West, Whetstone, Pickerington North, and Marion-Franklin.
“This is a free event for all the teams. Money raised through sponsors helped to pay for the tournament and the Barkan Memorial Outdoor Court at the JCC,” said Jeanna Brownlee, JCC Director of Sports and Wellness. “Through the three evenings of basketball games, the teams played two scheduled games and then were seeded and played in a single elimination tournament. Trophies were awarded to the First and Second place teams and medals were handed out to the All Tournament Team decided on by the coaches.”
The winning team this year was Bishop Hartley. Second place was South.
Through its special 15 years of service the annual event has touched over 1,000 teenagers. The funds raised through the shootout have enabled many teenagers to participate at no cost, and allowing them an outlet in the summer in a high-quality environment where otherwise they may not have received. Additionally, funds raised support youth sports programming at the JCC, and paid for the installation of an outdoor sport court on the grounds of the JCC that is used by the JCC Summer Camp and After School Program as well as JCC members of all ages, and will continue to be an asset to JCC programming and members for years to come.
“The Barkan Family and the JCC would like to express their appreciation to all the teams and the sponsors,” said Brownlee. “Their participation and generous donations helped make this tournament a success!”
