While snow may be on the way, but the JCC Summer Camp directors and staff already are planning for the 2012 camp season. “We are so excited for next summer,” said Halle Schwartz, director of JCC Children, Youth, Teen and Camping. “The theme for camp will be ‘The Summer of Creation,’ Briat Ha Olam. Each week has its own Jewish theme pertaining to the seven days of creation.”
She explained that, “The story of creation teaches about responsibility, community and building new beginnings and carrying it forward.”
“You will find these themes present in several weeks of the summer, but you also will find more personal themes that campers can work on, such as self-awareness, actions versus words and more,” said Halle.
“Every aspect in creation can, in some way, be tied to larger activities about Israel and life there,” she said. “As a Jewish camp, Israel plays an integral role in our programming. It is important to show Israel to the kids in a way that is more than just simple geography and that touches them to connect further to the country.”
Halle said camp directors currently are involved in planning for next summer. They are:
- Kim Moore – Director of Specialty Camps and CIT Program
- Leslie Rosen – Camp Yeladim-East
- Linda Fischer – Camp Yeladim-North
- Stephanie Markowitz – Camp Hoover co-director
- Mark Moscardino – Camp Hoover co-director
- Whitney Maruer – Camp Chaverim
- Shara Reiss – Camp Ora
- Marie Wells – Camp Arye
New Specialty Camps this summer will include: So You Think You Can Dance Camp, a Junior Aquatic Water Safety Camp, a Lacrosse Camp, Adventure Camp, and Girls Just Want to Have Fun. “We’re also bringing back favorites from previous years, including the My First Rock Band Camp, Cooking Camp, Lego Camp, Art Camp and Theater Camp,” said Halle.
“At Camp Ora, we will be adding Zumba and Science, which were big hits at Camp Chaverim last summer,” she said. “Camp Chaverim’s 2nd and 3rd graders also will enjoy ‘Hoover Tuesdays,’ where they will spend most of their day at our Hoover camp learning new skills such as High Ropes, Boating, Archery, and so much more.”
