JCC Sports Spectacular Returns August 24-25, 2014

JCC Sports Spectacular Returns August 24-25, 2014

The exciting return of Sports Spectacular to the Jewish Community Center is scheduled to kick off on August 24, 2014.  This year’s event, will be two days of sports-themed activities, and include the new addition of FUNtacular!, a carnival-style family-friendly celebration for all, and will be the highlight of the summer as well as the largest fundraiser of the JCC’s programming year.

This year’s two-day event will include tennis at Wolfe Park with tennis pros Al Matthews and Matt Worthsman and a golf tournament at Winding Hollow Golf and Event Center. After the success of last year’s Fun Fest, the newest component of Sports Spectacular will be Funtacular!, a Family Day for all ages to be held on the afternoon of August 24 on the grounds of the JCC on College Ave.

Sports Spectacular, a central Ohio sports tradition, is celebrating its 29th year, and offers the opportunity for community members to help support sports programs and activities for the youth of central Ohio.  Since the first Sports Spectacular in 1982 (the event was not held in 1995, 1999 or 2004 when the JCC played host to the Youth Maccabi Games) the event has raised almost $1.5 million.  The proceeds from Sports Spectacular are earmarked for youth athletic programs at the JCC and the event celebrates the agency’s commitment to youth sports, family wellness and recreational opportunities for the central Ohio community.

The fundraiser officially kicks off at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 24 with a tennis program and tournament at Wolfe Park.  The tennis package cost is $50 and includes a continental breakfast, snacks, drinks and a participant gift.

An exciting new component of the Sports Spectacular programming will be FUNtacular!, an afternoon of fun and food for all ages featuring Supergames inflatables and carnival-style food, much like last year’s Fun Fest. FUNtacular! will begin at noon on August 24.  In addition to the inflatables and food, FUNtacular! will include a youth basketball clinic featuring NBA-caliber professionals.  The basketball clinic will be held on the outdoor Barkan sport court.

Sports Spectacular continues the following day in New Albany at the Winding Hollow Golf and Event Center.   Participants can enjoy a full day of golf, continental breakfast, lunch on the greens, drinks, cocktails, as well as contests, prizes, and souvenirs.

“The annual Sports Spectacular event is a great tradition of the JCC.  Over the years the JCC has had many individuals and families not only participate, but also support the JCC and volunteered to make Sports Spectacular the one event everybody looks forward to participating in each summer.  It’s wonderful to have so many new additions to the committee this year. This year’s chairs were kids when the event was in its early years, and were able to benefit from the many sports programs and opportunities that the JCC offers. Now, they are stepping up to carry the torch and lay the foundation for their children, just as their parents did for them,” said Lisa Newmark, JCC Board President.

“Sports Spectacular is a wonderful way for the community to get out and enjoy the latter part of summer and also support youth sports,” said Lindsay Schottenstein.  “Between the tennis, golf, special raffles, and FUNtacular, there are many ways to participate.”

“It is especially thrilling to be able to organize the new FUNtacular! this year, for people of all ages to have the opportunity to participate in this community fundraiser and have fun at the same time,” added Jamie Topolosky.

Those who are unable to participate in tennis or golf, or to attend FUNtacular!, are still invited to be a “player” by purchasing raffle tickets.  This year raffles are being held on both days.  Raffle tickets for Sunday’s drawing at FUNtacular are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20.  Prizes include:  JCC annual membership including health club, Shabbat Dinner for up to 10 people provided by the JCC, $100 Rusty Bucket gift card, $50 Graeter’s gift card, and an iPad mini.  Raffle tickets for Monday’s drawings are $10 each or 6 tickets for $50.   Raffle items for Monday’s drawing include two sets of golf clubs (each set $500 value), a Texas Hold ‘em Ultimate Dealer Kit ($100 value) and more.
