Happy Passover
|
To our members celebrating Passover, the staff and Board of Trustees of the JCC wish you a very happy holiday.
Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) is the oldest continuously celebrated Jewish festival. The festival is a celebration of the Israelites’ liberation from bondage in Egypt. We celebrate with the Seder, which in Hebrew means order. Each year, we use the Haggadah to tell the story, the book that contains the entire service used for the Passover Seder. The Hebrew word for Egypt is Mitzrayim. When Jews talk about being “enslaved in Mitzrayim,” they mean not only in Egypt but also in all the times and places where Jews were not free to practice their religion.

Construction Progress
|
By the end of this week, most of the framing of the new areas will be complete, meaning features like the new group exercise room, the gym lounge and bathrooms, the J-Zone and J-Zone lounge, babysitting, toddler fit areas, and more will be defined spaces.
The crew is getting ready to pour the concrete floor that will go under the new gymnasium—be sure to glance that way as you enter or exit the building to see for yourself, and see how big the space is! Room for lots of basketball and two batting cages!
A skeletal view of the new lower level. Standing in the expanded cardio space, looking at the new stretching area, and beyond that, strength training space.

Russian Immigrants Share Stories of their Homeland: On View in the JCC Lobby
|
Inna Sharkova stands with her creations in the JCC lobby.
Come see a beautiful display honoring Columbus’ Russian Jewish immigrants in the JCC lobby right now. Here for only a week, the display is a labor of love coinciding with the NAACP award honoring the JCC, along with JCC staff Toney Robertson and Raisa Patlashenko, who helps Russian immigrants with acculturation.
Inna Sharkova, a librarian who immigrated from Russia and currently resides in Heritage Tower, spent a year and a half collecting Heritage Tower residents’ photographs, awards, and mementoes. She painstakingly recorded their memories in both English and Russian. These incredible panels are dedicated to educating the Columbus Jewish community about the lives of these Russian immigrants who now call Heritage Tower home.
In these lovely panels you will learn all about the Russian cities these Columbus residents left behind: Leningrad, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Gomel, Odessa, and many others. Take time to read the fascinating stories and history. Included in the collection is the touching biography of the late American Navy Lieutenant, Miroslav Steven Zilberman, who came here from Kiev and whose grandparents live in Heritage Tower.
Check them all out on your next JCC visit!

A Century of Stories: 100 Years Ago or Just Last Year, Tell us Your Story!
|
For every member, there is a different story. We'll be collecting—and sharing—your 100-word stories all year. We want to hear about your memories, moments, and mazel tovs. Please help us remember the last 100 years through your eyes.
Ingrid Silvian’s Story
My late husband, Sid Silvian, introduced me to the old JCC when I moved to Columbus. He was a stalwart with Gallery Players after the new one was built. It has become a second home to me over the years with all the events the Center offers that I take advantage of: mostly the New Horizon lunch programs, lectures, trips with seniors, walking the track, and a monthly writing class for seniors that I now run. The JCC is the place to be on Columbus' East side, a blessing for all.
Greta and Danny Zidel’s Story
We didn't grow up in Columbus, but after settling here in 1967, the JCC became an important part of our lives. Preschool, sports, study, entertainment, work-outs, special events, lasting friendships, and serving on the Board of Trustees have all enhanced our family's relationship in so many ways. The bond continues! Here's to 100+ more years of a thriving and vital JCC!

100 Year Quilt
|
This quilt was created by Jennifer Robinson, mother of Lucy, and Lucy’s classmates in the Explorers Pre-K Classroom. With the help of teachers Judy Romanello and Mindie Zisser, Robinson used the Passover plate felt pieces each child made to sew together this beautiful quilt honoring the JCC’s 100th birthday. Thank you, Explorers!
