Parent & Child Aquatics

Parent and Child: Aquatics Level 1

Ages: 6 months to 3 years

This course uses games, songs, and simple skills to familiarize children between the ages of 6 months and approximately 3 years with the water, and teach swimming readiness skills. Provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water. A parent or guardian must be in the water with their child for his class.

Parent and Child: Aquatics Level 2

Ages: 6 months to 3 years (Must have completed Level 1)

This course builds on the skills introduced in Level 1. Participants improve on these skills and learn more advanced skills in Level 2. We will use games, songs, and simple skills to familiarize children between the ages of 6 months and approximately 3 years, who have completed Level 1, with the water and teach swimming readiness skills. A parent or guardian must be in the water with their child for this class.

Preschool Aquatics

Preschool Aquatics Level 1

Ages: 3 to 5 years

This class is designed to orient preschool-age children to the aquatic environment and to help them acquire rudimentary levels of basic aquatic skills. This class is for children between the ages of 3 and 5. They will learn to relax in the water and get used to putting their face in the water, along with learning the basics of floating on their front and back.

Preschool Aquatics Level 2

Ages: 3 to 5 years (Must have completed Level 1)

The objectives of Level 2 are to further develop basic aquatic skills. Children begin to perform these skills at a slightly more advanced level than in Level 1. Level 2 marks the beginning of independent aquatic locomotion skills. Children continue to explore using simultaneous and alternating arm and leg preparation for performing strokes.

Preschool Aquatics Level 3

Ages: 3 to 5 years (Must have completed Level 1 & 2)

The objective of Level 3 is to increase child’s proficiency in performing previously learned skills. This is accomplished by providing additional guided practice and increasing repetitions, distances, times or levels of refinement. The skills in Level 3 are performed independently. Children improve their coordination and control of combined simultaneous arm and leg actions and alternating arm and leg actions.

American Red Cross Learn to Swim

Learn to Swim Level 1: Basic Water Skills

Ages: 6 to 12 years

This class is designed for children who have little to no experience with the water. Participants start developing positive attitudes, effective swimming habits and safe practices in and around the water. In this class children will learn to bob underwater, float on their front and back, jump into the water safely on their own, and other basic aquatic skills.

Learn to Swim Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Ages: 6 to 12 years (Must have completed Level 1)

The objective of Learn-to-Swim Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Participants learn to glide and float without support and recover to a vertical position. Participants further develop simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back, laying the foundation for future strokes.

Learn to Swim Level 3: Stroke Development

Ages: 6 to 12 years (Must have completed Level 1 & 2)

This class is designed to increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 by providing additional guided practice with increased distances and times. This class will focus on developing the front crawl, breast, and elementary backstroke.

Learn to Swim Level 4: Stroke Improvement

Ages: 6 to 12 years (Must have completed Level 1-3)

This level takes place in the deep and shallow end of our pool, focusing on the improvement of front crawl, breaststroke, back crawl, sidestroke, and the basics of the butterfly stroke will be introduced. Participants will also learn head-first entries, treading water, survival swimming, and basic open turns at the wall.

Learn to Swim Level 5: Stroke Refinement

Ages: 6 to 12 years (Must have completed Level 1-4)

In Level 5, participants refine their performance of all six strokes (i.e., front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke) and increase the distances that they swim. Participants also learn to perform flip turns on the front and back.

Adult swim: learn the basics

Adult Swim: Learning the Basics

Age: 13+ years

Learning the Basics introduces basic aquatic skills and swimming strokes, including the front crawl, breaststroke and elementary backstroke.

FLO WITH FLO

This is a specialty small group class designed for a total mind-body water aerobic workout. This class will focus on building strength, stamina, and flexibility. The goal is to improve general fitness and overall wellness. With a small class, individual concerns can be addressed with the concentration on those areas. Flow with Flo means having FUN while improving the overall mind/body experience. Taught by Flo Gurwin.

Pre-Competitive Artistic Swimming

The pre-competitive level is an opportunity to begin or continue your journey in Artistic Swimming without the added commitment of competition. We will meet for one hour every week on Monday evenings. JCC Aquatics Program Coordinator & Ohio Coralina’s USAAS Level 3 coach, Kellagh Frank, will lead this beginner novice team. Swimmers will learn Artistic Swimming basics and work together as one to swim an original routine. In April, we will have the opportunity to exhibit our hard work at an all Ohio invitational meet.

Participate in swim programs at the JCC to build your water safety skills and confidence!

THE AMERICAN RED CROSS PROVIDES A VARIETY OF WATER SAFETY PROGRAMS FOR BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS.

STUDENTS OF ALL AGES WILL LEARN TO:

  • Swim skillfully
  • Behave safely in and around water
  • Know what to do in an emergency
  • Build lifelong skills and water competency

All classes are taught by American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors™.

PRICING:

Group Swim Lessons: range from $84-$100 per 6 week session

Private Swim Lessons: $210 for 6 lessons (used at least once per week)

Semi-Private Lessons (2-4 participants): $175 for 6 lessons (per participant)

Semi-Private Lesson participants do not have to be from the same membership account.

Lifeguard Certification Class

Ages: 15+ years

This blended-learning course provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills as a Lifeguard to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for 2 years.

Required prerequisites can be found online in the course registration.

Lifeguard Review Class

Ages: 15+ years

Participants must possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification in order to qualify for this course (certifications that have expired no more than 30 days prior to the start of class are also accepted). Upon successful completion, participants will renew their Red Cross certifications in Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification.

Babysitter's training

Ages 11+

This course will prepare participants to provide quality care to children of all ages, guide them in safe and age-appropriate play, keep themselves and others protected when alone and respond to emergencies. Successful completion of the course results in American Red Cross Babysitter Certification, documentation of training and certification in Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED. Participants will also receive a class handbook and first aid reference guide to keep.

Adult & Pediatric first aid with CPr/aed

Ages 11+

The Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED blended learning course equips students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid breathing and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children, and infants. It is designed for students who need a certification that satisfies OSHA workplace or other regulatory requirements. This class is taught in a blended learning format and the online portion must be completed prior to attending the Instructor-led skills session. Upon successful completion, a valid 2 year digital certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED is issued.

Water safety instructor (WsI) Certification class

Ages 16+

The purpose of the Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics.

Prerequisites: Candidates must be 16 years old by the last day of class. Successfully pass the pre-test by demonstrating stroke knowledge and technique at a American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4 Stroke Performance level, maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling), and tread water for 1 minute.

lifeguard instructor course

Ages 17+

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) course is to train instructor candidates to teach the basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding Instructor, valid for 2 years.

Prerequisites: Be at least 17 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course. Possess a current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the precourse skills session via the class roster and online content completion status report. Obtain all instructor and participant materials before entering the first session of the instructor course.
